The government today launched the Indian Space Research Organization (Isro) satellite for long-distance, ultra-high frequency communication (UHF-HF), a step towards enhancing India's global surveillance capabilities and ensuring uninterrupted supply of basic communication services to its citizens.
The satellite was launched late yesterday from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre at Sriharikota in Andhra Pradesh and was its intended orbit for only three minutes.
According to N A Srivastava, Director, Mission Analysis Division, Indian Space Research Organisation (Isro), the satellite was built on PSLV rocket and would be launched in 2016.
"This is a very important milestone for Isro," he explained. "This was a mission with scientific objective for monitoring the environment, providing emergency services during disasters and assisting the remote local population in various aspects of their lives.
"The country needs to have a reliable way of communicating with the global community from our own space assets and it needs to be within the means of people," he added.
